in consequence of the missive, Autobiography of Jane Eyre: Dinner - Ep: 12, penned by Kellyn B
Hmm, I've become a true fan and I'm ready to defend it nearly every time, but this episode felt less good that the last ones.
I liked the set-up - a formal dinner party with Adele setting up the camera to record herself opening the present. Sounds OK. Jane looked good - pretty, but not too gorgeous. I kinda enjoy the teasing with not showing us Mr Rochester's face, though I think they shouldn't overdo it. Grace Poole who was mostly kind like Mrs Fairfax was again rather strange and intense in this episode. The dialogue between Jane and Mr Rochester seemed a bit forced. Probably intentional, but I don't know. Somehow it left me unsatisfied. I agree, Kellyn, that Mr Rochester sounds like her father, at least nominally. Though he seems distant and boss-like, exactly as you said. In the book, Mr Rochester praised Jane for her good work with Adele, improving her understanding in several subjects despite her lack of talent and intelligence (at least in Mr Rochester's eyes). But this Adele is a genius -- what will he praise her for? Making her livelier and more child-like? I would say that Adele on-screen works better that Jane talking about her.
I actually thought the poor audio was a glitch and that they would re-upload it or do something to fix it. I like the authenticity and I really enjoy Jane's recording from the outside with a shaky cam, but this seemed unnecessary. Also, the series is running for some time and I think it's time for Jane as a character to figure out stuff like editing, audio and so on.
I miss Jane talking about her life. That's why she started vlogging in the first place, no? To have something like a video diary to analyse her life a bit and show it to others to be brave and have some input from a small number of viewers. Now she uploaded two random slices of her life without her thoughts on it.
