To the best of my knowledge, he'd need to know about land law, business methods, agriculture, and have a good knowledge of the area.. (there were posts about this on VV recently).

I can't see the tenants being too happy with an Irish land agent who used to be a chauffeur when he wasn't taking part in seditious activities in Ireland.. as they would see it. And he's there to manage the estate, which has already been poorly managed, (at a time when British agriculture was doign badly) not to represent the tenants.. Of course he woudl look to their interests to an extent but if improving the estate meant cutbacks, then he would have to balance the interests of individual tenants against the good of the estate as a whole.
