What qualifications did one need to be an estate's land agent? Since he is not doing the actual farming, I would think managerial and people skills would be more important than actual knowledge about farming methods. There would be some farmers for the estate who would be doing better than others, and it would really only take some insights to see who should get more responsibility for methods to follow than others. There were probably lots of ways to find out about farming methods and what would work. I'm not so sure Tom Branson was unqualified for the job, any more or less than Mathew was qualified to say what needed to be changed, or even Robert, for that matter. It would seem to me that Tom's main job would be to represent the farmers' opinions to Mathew and Robert.
I tried to google a few things to see if I could come up with any description of what a good land agent would know, but I don't see how Tom would be unqualified to take on such a job, especially with Mathew and other farmers to help tutor him. Anyone who knows more about what a land agent needed to be qualified? |
