That seems more plausible to me. Lavinia's father had left the money in line (IIRC) to 3 people, a relative, another relative, and then to Matt who was his daughter's fiance...

So, since Relative 1 had died, Relative 2 had gone missing, Matt was next in line. Fair enough....
But to make Tom into a land agent, when he has no experience of the job, just seems to me ridiculous.. While of course actors have the right to leave shows if they want to, I dont think that their activities shoudl dictate the script as much as seems to happen nowadays. If Sybil actress wanted to go fine, write her out, and write Tom out with her....
