in consequence of the missive, Tom well read, penned by bridget D
But if you want the fiction you watch or read to go according to what seems most logical, you will always be disappointed.
Tom did participate in one of those breaking up estates events; it involved the burning of an estate and if I recall, there were deaths involved. Tom escapaed and Sybil followed (while she was pregnant). The ensuing negotiation via Grantham contacts means that Tom cannot return to Ireland or he will be imprisoned. Given that fate, and the fact that his daughter has one parent, I can see why he would choose England. Furthermore, the incident scared him completely because although he is a radical in thought, he is not one in deed and the violence and murder upset him. Furthermore, I believe that the plans Matthew and Tom had included modernising the estate/farming practices and making it a better (more successful) proposition for everyone involved. I agree that Tom argues with his principles in this series, but let's face it - he started out as a chaffeur for the rich guy. If he was really that offended, he should have found a job somewhere else and never come to Downton. |
