So if he's well read political and a writer, why doesn't he get a job involving the use of these skills? Why not be a journalist, or a secretary to a politician?

Why become a bailfif/ estate manager, a job for which as far as I can see, he has no qualifications and which must go against, to an extent, the principles he presumably had. An Irish republican of his time would wish for the break up of landed estates such as had happened in Ireland, with the sale of the land to the farmers.
