While not formally educated, Tom is well-read, political and a writer. He was a chaffeur with aspirations and those aspirations did not include moving into the upper classes. That happened because of who he married. Edna is the opposite. She doesn't have any of the qualities required to move up and she is looking to do it through romance and potentially marriage.

I'm glad the Tom/Edna thing didn't go anywhere. Firstly, he is still grieving for Sybil. Second, Edna is not his match. He can do better.
