I didn't think he was flirting with the maid Written by JoAnn (2/18/2013 2:24 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mary?, penned by bridget D

She was flirting with him, and he didn't see it for what it was - he was looking for connection to the downstairs, especially when everyone upstairs was gone, and struggling with his own identity as an in-betweener. She took advantage of that, I think with hopes of bettering herself.

And I agree with Angela H - his in-between status makes him interesting, and is a powerful tool in the push toward modernity and compromise that Downton is going through.
