Leaving the Mary and Tom conversation behind, I think the fact that Branson is so in-between is one of the things that makes him an interesting character. Life commonly produces situations like this, where a person is somehow between worlds and doesn't seem to fit quite right in either, and watching how they deal with it is interesting (at least to me). I often can really identify with those characters because I feel that way in various parts of my life.
