I think Mary, after the shock has subsided, will be very angry. She has looked forward to being the Countess of Grantham and thinks she woud be better at the job than her mother.

What is she now? Mother of the heir only. The title, house etc. will go to her son and his wife. She, if she doesn't marry again, will be removed to the Dowager's house and forced to play a limited role from the sidelines.
