I agree, Timothy Dalton looks much more like book Rochester than most of the actors who've played him (I haven't seen the version with Orson Welles).
And it's easy to buy that Rochester is not attractive, because he's so dark and brooding and even rude. It works for me.
My own problem with Jane Eyre adaptations is that so many of them have a blonde Blanche Ingram (with sometimes a dark-haired Jane for a suitable contrast). Why, why?
