in consequence of the missive, Mr Selfridge, penned by Elizabeth K
I just wrote a long bit and lost it during preview. Sigh.
I missed this past Sunday night because I was away but watched all the other episodes. I think the series is ok, but as you say and I believe I wrote previously, I am not as drawn in to these characters as I am to Downton Abbey. I guess there is a chemistry to a program and they either hit it, or not. It is the writing of course, but I think the casting and acting skills have a lot to do with it too. I like that Rose created an alter ego in Mrs Buckingham so that she could have a bit of fun too. It must be hard to watch your husband's repeated transgressions and maintain the moral high ground. I can't say I blame her. I'm not sure if she did anything, ahem, naughty this past episode with her artist friend. Either way, I don't mind. I would love it if she brought home her portrait. That would give her husband a SUTH. I would also compare this series to The Paradise since they are both department store stories, a few decades apart. The Paradise also pulled me in and I was rooting for Denise and Moray to succeed. I rooted for everyone in that show, even Katherine who got a bit crazy by the end. I don't feel the same about the characters in Mr Selfridge. I'll keep watching because 9pm Sundays is made for period drama, but I don't feel the need to rewatch episodes or buy the DVD.
