This seems like a follow on to BBC series The Paradise, which was also based on a department store. When one network has a good idea, the others follow. I don't know the book, but The Paradise was based on a novel by Emile Zola. Presumably the Mr Selfridge story is a bit more biographical since it is based on a real person and a real store.

I won't check the link to the trailer but I did find some bits about the program and the man on Wikipedia. It seems ITV pushed back the air date of this series so that it wouldn't conflict with The Paradise. I don't mind - I like having a period drama to follow on a regular basis so when one follows another, I'm happy.
