I dont think it works so well on TV as it is a more intimate medium. Different actors can play stage roles but on TV you see an actor in the same role every week and you form a sort of relationship with him or her. YOu see them up close whereas in a play you are not so close to the stage and dont get so close to them.

So if a TV actor leaves -while you can recast, and it soemtimes works, its likely that it might not click so well with the viewers, who have formed their attachment to the first actor in the role. It mgiht wrok if a character is growing up, or if there's a bit of a gap in between the series, or if the new actor is better than the first one
