This was a very strange challenge, IMO. It seemed more gimmicky to me than anything else; it's great to encourage the use of low-eco-impact fabrics and everything, but next week they'll go straight back to Mood, and who the heck knows where and how those fabrics are produced??
Anyway, that little rant aside, one thing that I thought was just kind of odd was that the designers seemed to just be handing around the fabric swatches to the person next to them - maybe they forgot that they were supposed to be doing it strategically, to give people who they saw as competition the last pick? In any case, there didn't seem to be the same intention behind selecting the next person to choose as there has been in the past.
It was definitely Althea's time to go, but I don't think Ivy will be far behind. Althea's design looked so amateurish, and I don't understand why she and Uli went with short dresses for a red carpet challenge (I know why Ivy did - because she's incapable of creating her ambitious designs in three dimensions - oops, did I say that out loud??) When I think red carpet, I think drama and long hemlines. Cocktail dresses are a whole other genre.
Laura Kathleen totally deserved the win. I loved the fact that she went with palazzo pants instead of a dress. That more than anything showed me that she understood what the guest judge would want (and they do have a similar aesthetic - that easy, kind of boho elegance). Yes, Carolyn Murphy would be wearing it, but I almost feel like CM recused herself from the bulk of the judging in deference to DVF, and just sort of agreed to wear the winning design, whereas with the looks that were in the bottom three, CM was more outspoken about not wanting to wear them.
Anthony Ryan must be putting something in the judges' drinks every week. They cannot stop praising him to the skies! His gown looked kind of bulky and unwieldy to me, but they were falling all over themselves AGAIN finding all sorts of wonderful things to say about it.
Emilio really lost his way with this one. At least he had the good grace to admit it. He hasn't been nearly so arrogant lately as he was on his original season. I'm hoping he makes it to the top three, but only if he continues to show his better side.
What's strange about Josh is that the judges on his original season were always after him to edit and watch his taste level, and he's been hovering around "safe" almost every episode on All-Stars. Casanova, too. I actually really loved his gown this week - I thought he used the solid side of the fabric very thoughtfully.
Basically, I want Ivy to get eliminated next, then Josh. That will leave Emilio, Casanova, Laura Kathleen, Uli, and Anthony Ryan. I think (I hope!) at that point, we'd start to see really good work from all of those designers and the judges would have some tough decisions to make.
