G.R A debate by JA?   Written by Mandy N (9/25/2003 9:32 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: So..., penned by Lucy K
Are you new?

I must admit your letter had me chewing! Essentially,S&S now appears to me a 'debate' Elinor/Marianne act out; With JA comparing the rationality and suppression of feelings by one sister with the liveliness and free emotions of the other. Each sister had to learn either to express her commonsense and judgement or learn to accept and express her feelings. (Barbara's letter expresses this better than mine!) As human nature possesses both emotions and reason,we shouldn't deny either of them but learn how to balance them in our behaviour. Personally, I think JA may have agreed with you. I don't know what age she began S&S but I believe the drafting was a long process over a number of years; (presumably she made some changes.)
