]In the meantime, she would still be on the prowl for some dimwitted rich guy to marry her. It wouldn't be difficult to postpone a wedding for financial reasons endlessly, but when she finally gave up hope, Edward would still be there.

She would have kept Edward hanging on indefinitely while she kepther options open, knowing he would never be dishonourable enough to drop her. And engaged or married, rich or poor, she would continue to make him miserable. It says something about a relationship when the nicest thing she ever did for him was run off with his brother.
