in consequence of the missive, In my opinion,, penned by emi
] what Colonel Brandon sees in Marianne is the reincarnation of Eliza (Snip) ] "I once knew a lady who in temper and mind greatly resembled your sister, who thought and judged like her", "If I am not deceived by the uncertainty, the partiality of tender recollection, there is a very strong resemblance between them, as well in mind as person -- the same warmth of heart, the same eagerness of fancy and spirits ) ] (Snip) ] His emotion in entering the room, in seeing her altered looks, and in receiving the pale hand which she immediately held out to him, was such as in Elinor's conjecture, must arise from something more than his affection for Marianne, (Snip) ] So, voila, the colonel finds another girl, who looks and thinks and acts like her former lost love and tries to grasp the second chance (Snip) I think you have some well chosen passages which show the resemblance Colonel Brandon must've intially perceived between Eliza and Marianne-their lively spirits,'warmth of heart'and youth. Probably this was part of his intial attraction to Marianne but I think Colonel Brandon felt genuine affection and devotion to her. Certainly,Elinor observes his emotion on seeing Marianne's altered looks as misery which must arise from more than his feelings for Marianne. Yet, the Colonel seems a sensitive guy who is more complex than to simply marry M. as he sees her as an incarnation of Eliza. Is it possible to just transfer one's feelings for a first attachment to a second love? (one for the philosophers!) Your missive gave me a good comparision of Marianne and Eliza. :) |
