] In this chapter, we finally begin to see Marianne living up to the praise she received in Ch. 1. Among the things she would not have done in chapters 2 through 42 are:

] The only thing that came through as the same Marianne was a possible over-reaction in the scope of her resolutions. She seems to want to eliminate every vestige of sensibility to lead a life of piety and sense. Still, she's making great strides towards becoming a more complete person.

I've always enjoyed that as it is proof that Marianne has not 'lost' her enthusiasm as many of the editors who write essays in the front of books always suggest (you know what I mean, those academic essays in some editions) and that she is a shadow of herself, wholly subdued and hence her marriage to the dear Colonel is 'giving in' completely to a life of sense and a complete loss of passion. I always find that very depressing.

A happy couple they should be, I'm sure!
