I'm glad you brought this up - I had to look up "dissemble" since I wasn't quite sure what it meant -

1 : to hide under a false appearance
2 : to put on the appearance of : to put on a false appearance : conceal facts, intentions, or feelings under some pretense

I think that line you mentioned above is the key to the whole "confession" - he was dissembling the whole time!! (even though he felt so much guilt he almost couldn't keep up the act!)
