JA: The cliffhanger   Written by Barbara (9/12/2003 9:32 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: The impolitic cruelty, penned by joe m

Thanks Joe! I wanted to talk about the cliffhanger ending of Ch. 43. This is a real one, and it's not really like JA to leave cliffhangers at the ends of chapter--at least not of this magnitude!

It's an especially good one, IMO, because just before Elinor realizes it's Willoughby come to Cleveland, she has been expecting it to be Colonel Brandon and her mother. It is, at this point, possible that they could return at any time.

Colonel Brandon has made no secret of his feelings about Willoughby. The last time they saw each other was at opposite ends of pistols in their duel! And now here is Willoughby where he certainly ought not to be with Colonel Brandon due to arrive at any moment. Cliffhanger indeed!
