G.R: Marianne , A passionate victim of her nature?   Written by Mandy N (9/11/2003 9:30 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Precious, invaluable misery, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

] Then we read that she is rejoicing in 'tears of agony' to be at Cleveland,

] It is like she's squeezing every bit of over the top emotion she can get out of this, isn't it? I mean, it's not actually possible to see Combe Magna from there, Willoughby isn't there just now, and he's already married. I confess that I couldn't help thinking to myself when I read the first part of this chapter "Drama queen"...

] What do you all think? Do you see signs of this addiction/attraction to 'violence' as Tave suggests?
Personally, I find it hard not to take Marianne's youth into account. I think she had more of a 'violent crush' on Willoughby than any addiction to violence. Admittedly, it's a while since I read 'S&S' but I cannot recall any actual violent behavior in Marianne except the aspects you recounted, which really only hurt herself. True, she could be self-centred and I agree while getting over Willoughby she was a real drama queen,an emotion freak! However, she later appeared at least resigned to this loss. J.A. herself tells us in chapter 50 how she 'submitted' to her new life as Mrs Brandon. For a young woman with such a passionate nature as Marianne it appears she learnt some self discipline and,if not happiness, then at least contentment. If she was really still 'violently attracted' to Willoughby, she might have become his mistress.
