GR: Marianne   Written by joe m (9/8/2003 8:06 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: First stirrings of respect for Marianne (long), penned by KateL
Are you new?

Having been rather harsh on Marianne for much of this group read, it's only proper that I praise her when she's not being a shrew. (-; The part that you mentioned here:

] "Oh! Elinor," she cried, "you have made me hate myself for ever...

combined with her "advances towards heroism" in ch. 37 and "Marianne forgave all his offences in compassion for his punishment", show that there is a glimmer of hope that the good person described in ch. 1 is ready to make an entrance into the novel.

However, there is still some, (only some) of the self-absorbed brat in the speech that begins "Oh! Elinor." Marianne says 'you' 4 times, but 'I' 3 times; 'me' 3 times and 'my' or 'myself' 5 times.
