GR: reliable gossip   Written by Barbara (9/8/2003 2:26 a.m.)
Are you new?

I was noticing especially in this week's first few chapters how much gossip is floating around. Mrs. Jennings, especially, seems to live for it and I was LOL! at the way she tried to behave herself while she thought Colonel Brandon was proposing to Elinor!

She seems to have her whole network of sources, and I was particularly surprised at how much information she was able to get out of Mr. Donovan, who really ought to have been more discreet.

One thing that is funny about Mrs. Jennings, though, is that her gossip and the rumours she is spreading are often all too true. Back when Colonel Brandon left Barton park, she actually hit upon the reason for his departure quite accurately--that it had something to do with Eliza.

Luckily, Elinor stopped her from spreading the news about Bradnon's proposal, or that would have been all over town too.

What do you all think about the gossip making the rounds in London and the methods used to obtain it?
