] ]I seem to recall from somewhere (L&T?) that the contraction "an't" was viewed very much like today's "ain't": a sign of low breeding.

Interesting point. I tried searching for both `an't' and `ain't' on the Jane Info pages (see link) and in that version of the text, sometimes it's spelt `ain't'

Apart from S&S, the only other occurence in JA is Mrs Elton in Emma, which bears out what you say about vulgarity.
