GR : Conversation about money : chapter 17   Written by Pierre (9/4/2003 11:50 a.m.)
Are you new?

Hello,

I know I am a bit late, but I would like to talk about the conversation Marianne and Elinor are having about wealth and happiness at the start of chapter 17.
When I first read this dialog, it struck me as very improper, although neither Elinor, Mrs Dashwood nor Edward seem to mind.

I felt uneasy to see them talk so freely with Edward Ferrars about the "ideal" income and wealth, and everything they would do if someone could give them a large fortune apiece.

Can't they feel that this subject is risky? Shouldn't such conversations be private, kept inside the family?
