GR: Oh, dear. That´s a bit harsh   Written by Ingrid Linnéa (9/2/2003 5:55 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Still no pity for Marianne (long), penned by joe m
Are you new?

] I realize she's in rather a state of shock, and some allowances must be made for this, but how can a person so blinded from reality function in the world?

IMO Marianne has received a formidable blow. She is young, it´s her first love, and of course she believes in Wickhams feelings until she is proven wrong. She doesn´t want to be proven wrong, though. Therefore it takes a lot of time till she admits to herself that he has been deceitful.

Well, and how can such a blinded person function in the world? Not always so very well, but growing older and more experienced can be very helpful. That is, if that person has good people around him or her, that saves her from the worst mistakes. Marianne has that advantage, in Elinor as well as in others.

And as you question Marianne´s abilities: IMHO it´s quite possible to be clever, but not wise. They are not the same thing. ;-)
