It's a very plausible scenario. I hesitate over it, though, because we don't see Willoughby being ready to take responsibility for his actions in general. I'll grant you, though, that if anything might be likely to make you own up to doing wrong, it would be death staring you in the face. My private mental image of Colonel Brandon's eyes behind a duelling pistol would promote reform even in the worst of libertines! =8-O
]]Brandon, being the honorable man he is, would have afterwards done the same, for he could not then shoot an unarmed man, just standing there.
That I can easily agree with--my scenario might be that Willoughby fired first as the challenged party . . . and missed. That leaves it up to Brandon. A moment of terror to drive the lesson home, and then Brandon might fire into the air to make his point. No injuries, but Willoughby might need a change of trousers!
