] Interesting you raise this since that's exactly the feeling we should be getting for Colonel Brandon throughout the whole story! the poor thing so in love with Marianne but she and Willoughby close as kittens.[

Edward and Lucy are actually engaged. Marianne never gave Col. Brandon a single reason to hope.

If there's any parallel at all it's in comparing Edward and Willoughby and how they honor or dishonor the commitments they've made.
