GR: Interesting   Written by Line (8/27/2003 9:31 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: But this all begs the question..., penned by Cheryl

] We've all been pretty hard on Marianne this read (with reason, I believe), but why would such a wonderful, sweet man like Col. Brandon fall in love with such a whiny, petulant, selfish brat like Marianne?

My edition of S&S has an introduction by Margaret Drabble, and reading your post, I remembered reading this:

"Austen does her best to render plausible Brandon's *somewhat unlikely* passion for Marianne", so somebody agrees with you, though it's hard to tell whether she's talking about Marianne being selfish, or other reasons!
