GR Marianne and the Colonel - match.com?   Written by Annette J. (8/27/2003 6:56 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: The course of true love..., penned by Barbara
Are you new?

] The whole mis-matched lovers theme and people wanting the wrong person runs all through this story. Much of this could equally be applied to the Elinor/Edward/Lucy triangle as well.

There is much mis-matching in the book, including the obviously mis-matched Palmers. I feel that much of the distaste that some readers have for the Brandon to Marianne attraction is the age difference, as has been discussed on other threads. He is slightly more twice her age -- a 35 year old MAN yearning after a 17 year old GIRL (and that is what she is, not a woman)in our society would be all over the National Inquirer, and he would probably be facing court-ordered counselling at the very least.

Or he would be posting ads on match.com: "35 year old SWM seeks lively, imaginative, and passionate SF under the age of 20 to share long walks down leafy country lanes, romps over grassy hills, and deep soulful discussions of the romantic poets." I have seen a variation of that ad every time I have looked on match.com, so this idea of an older man being attracted to a young girl who doesn't edit a single feeling that she has, doesn't seem strange to me.
