GR: Marianne's description   Written by Cheryl (8/27/2003 1:33 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Why he may love her, penned by joe m
Are you new?

Yes, this is the description of a very nice person, isn't it? But we're not seeing much of that person. The "not prudent" side of Marianne is looming large in the narrative, making it very difficult to see her as Elinor's equal in everything but prudence! Her sensibility far overshadows her good qualities, making her very nearly unlovable, IMO.

A smart man like Col. Brandon, while he must be seeing more of her good side than we are, must also see this most unflattering side. He knows full well that he is the recipient of her disdain. Why would he want to spend his life with a person who thinks so little of him - regardless of her good qualities?
