GR: Why he may love her   Written by joe m (8/27/2003 12:51 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: But this all begs the question..., penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

] ...why in the world does he love her?? We've all been pretty hard on Marianne this read (with reason, I believe), but why would such a wonderful, sweet man like Col. Brandon fall in love with such a whiny, petulant, selfish brat like Marianne? I suppose some men like that in a woman, but

From ch. 1: "Marianne's abilities were, in many respects, quite equal to Elinor's. She was sensible and clever; but eager in everything; her sorrows, her joys, could have no moderation. She was generous, amiable, interesting: she was everything but prudent. The resemblance between her and her mother was strikingly great. "

While much of what we've seen of Marianne has been whiny petulant and selfish, the Col. has seen moments of her being interesting, amiable and clever. She just hasn't directed those qualities towards him. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to believe that Brandon would enjoy the company of a spirited and bright woman.
