Lucy's being engaged at all, even if it is a secret one, is better than nothing for her! She's not going to give it up easily, because what man in his senses would want to marry her - unless under the influence of youthful infatuation??! She really has nothing to lose!

No, I'm not sure Edward has any sort of plan. In all honour he can't tell anyone and until and unless LS consents to break if off he's pretty well stuffed!
