] I wondered too why Edward saw fit to wear the ring while visiting at Barton Cottage.

Maybe he was trying very hard to live up to the forms that are followed by people who are engaged. Engaged couples write to each other, visit each other and carry trinkets that remind them of each other.

They do not keep their engagements secret or visit other women to whom they are attracted but this only further demonstrates Edward's apparent inner struggle with the whole thing.
