GR: Arts and crafts   Written by Cass (8/26/2003 3:09 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Very cool, penned by Laraine
Are you new?

] If you're with me so far, you may also find it interesting that while Lucy quills, Elinor actually paints. Lucy has all the patience it takes do meticulous crafts and to keep her feet firmly planted on Edward for five years, and Elinor has all the gifts to paint with realy taste and to attract Edward genuinely within a few weeks.

This is a fascinating observation, and I'd like to take it a bit further by pointing out in what context JA has referred to Elinor's drawing and interest in art: chapters 3 and 4, where Marianne discusses Edward's taste; and chapter 17, where Edward jokes that if she could, she'd buy every print she could get her hands on. Art and Edward: they occur together as a means of characterizating Elinor as the talented, creative, person who attracts him.

] That's probably way far-fetched, but it crossed my mind as another externalization of inner qualities, so I though I'd share it :)

Wonderful how a novel can be so creative and meticulously written at the same time, isn't it? JA clearly had both kinds of qualities if we can keep finding more and more to delve into.
