] It also begs the question why does Edward wear it? (apart from it adding to the mystery part of the plot). If he is not in love with Lucy, why expose himself to the embarassing questions? Couldn't he just put it away and wear it in her presence.

I wondered too why Edward saw fit to wear the ring while visiting at Barton Cottage. It is possible that Lucy made him promise he would always wear it and Edward would not break a promise. I thought that perhaps he was trying to send a gentle hint to Elinor so she would not be deluded and end up hurt, but when he was questioned about the ring he did not tell of the engagement he said that the hair is his sister's.
