] Edward's duty to Lucy Steele is one of the trickier things for modern readers to grasp. ...(snip) Had he done otherwise, he never would not have kept Elinor's heart. She would not accept a man who wormed his way out of a solemn promise, even if it was done so that he could marry her.
But Edward was unhappy with his engagement well before he met Elinor. I don't believe there would be any compromise to his honour or reputation to break off an engagement made in secret that would be against his family's wishes and which would lead to an unhappy married life for him.
