] Servants were around all the time and sort of assumed to be in the background. Perhaps a reason why we can still all relate to Jane Austen is because she didn't dwell on the details like servants, which would seem strange to us now. She focused instead on character, and people haven't changed that much![

As a matter of fact, I am FASCINATED by the role of the servants and I love tidbits like that. It is interesting how invisible the servants were, and that passage tells you something about the gentry's attitude.

If anyone wants to post on a thread about the role of the servants, I'll start one at Life & Times.
