While reading your posts I'm reminded of Elinor's whole But why should you dislike him?" conversation with Willoughby..

he has threatened me with rain when I wanted it to be fine; he has found fault with the hanging of my curricle, and I cannot persuade him to buy my brown mare.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but imagine if the gentlemen _were_ involved in political discussion out int he world of men; could the first two parts of the above, the bold bit, refer to the way Brandon's political side argues about these issues, and threats; and Willoughby's denounces them? Where a certain social conduct is thought agreeable to one side, and opposed by the other?
