This is entirely wild speculation, but it's occurred to me that this may tie in with my earlier post about the similarities between Colonel Brandon and Warren Hastings. Hastings was tried in parliament for his activities in India, and the Whigs were particularly determined in the attack. Another undercurrent of dislike between Brandon and Willoughby, perhaps?
