GR: Charlotte   Written by Mary Anne (8/19/2003 8:32 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I think she thinks, penned by Nuria
Are you new?

] Charlotte is happier with MrPalmer than she could have been with Brandon. I guess that as a MP he has a livelier social life than Brandon´s, and that really suits Charlotte´s character.

Charlotte is a very silly woman, and yet she has great capacity for enjoyment simply because she's too silly to be insulted by anything; a more intelligent woman would realize how many nasty things Mr. Palmer is saying to her. (Of course, a more intelligent woman would not merit such remarks!) But I'd say Charlotte would be reasonably happy with almost any man who didn't actively abuse her. She's more than willing to be pleased with people just as she finds them.

In this, she's a great deal like her mother, I think. Mrs. Jennings is somewhat more intelligent and we see later that she is capable of getting angry, but good nature seems to be one of her ruling qualities. Make me wonder how much part intelligence plays in happiness . . . ?
