I agree that Mrs. Dashwood was as taken in by Willoughby as Marrianne was. I also agree that if she had acted more the parent, Marrianne might have been spared some public embarrassment, if not actual heartbreak. A simple question would do it - if she wasn't engaged, Marianne would be forced to admit it and if questioned on his behaviour, she might begin to wonder herself why he hadn't actually got around to asking yet.
