in consequence of the missive, GR: Elinor frightened?, penned by Art
This does seem to be a possibility.
] Does anyone have any other ideas?
I've always read it that "being frightened" is part of the pleasure of the day - whether touring old castles (I think I've been reading NA too much!) or riding in open carriages or sailing on the lake. The ladies can take a fright so that the gentlemen can look gallant and everybody will have something to talk over when all are safe by the fire!! But on rereading it, it does seem to come from nowhere.
