GR: Elinor frightened?   Written by Art (8/19/2003 12:11 a.m.)
Are you new?

At the beginning of Chapter 13, we have Elinor's expectation of the excursion to Whitwell: "She was prepared to be wet through, fatigued, and frightened ..."

The "wet through" and "fatigued" I could see; but "frightened"? So far, Elinor has not shown any propensity to be frightened -- certainly not by anything encountered in the previous chapters. What new danger could be lurking at Whitwell?

About the only thing I could think of was that maybe Elinor was nervous about sailing on the "noble piece of water", and not just because of the probable dampness. Perhaps she couldn't swim?

Does anyone have any other ideas?
