GR: The Annoying Mrs. Jennings   Written by Cheryl (8/18/2003 11:28 p.m.)
Are you new?

Mrs. Jennings just makes my skin crawl in this week's chapters. She downright badgers Col. Brandon about his letter, makes sly inuendos about the subject of it; she deceminates the "facts" about Col. Brandon's "natural daughter"; she spreads the tale of Marianne's heartbreak far and wide; she has great fun over the fact that Edward's name begins with an "F"...

She is an uncomfortable character to read. Like that relative we all have who talks too much and too loudly at Thanksgiving dinner, telling more family secrets with each dish and winding up alientating everyone else while professing that she's only trying to help.

Amy used to call Jane Austen the "Squirm-meister" in that some of her characters make us squirm because they are too real and hit too close to home. That mirror she holds up to humanity is unrelenting in its honesty. Mrs. Jennings is one such character for me. *shudder*
