While Marianne has been quite annoying so far, both with Willoughby, and pining for him, her character is saved somewhat in chapter 16:

He was the only person in the world who could at that moment be forgiven for not being Willoughby

Despite all of her self-absorbtion, she can still think of Elinor's happiness.
