|GR: Another LOL moment

The first time I read S&S, I rushed through it (inhaled it), waiting to see what happened to everybody, who ended up with whom. This time I am reading it really slowly, frequently going back to reread a passage to savor it or to make sure I truly understand it.
The biggest surprise -- and enjoyment -- is finding so many LOL moments, almost one in every other sentence. There are too many to enumerate right now, but one that really tickled me was the narrator's advice on how important it was to have a child at every gathering.
...and Lady Middleton had taken the wise precaution of bringing with her their eldest child, a fine little boy about six years old, by which means there was one subject always to be recurred to by the ladies in case of extremity, for they had to enquire his name and age, admire his beauty, and ask him questions which his mother answered for him...(SNIP)
Too, too funny! The perfect cure for those lulls in conversations! Dear Jane, with her tongue always planted firmly in her cheek. ;-)
