GR: Living in style - confused about property settlement   Written by Annette J. (8/16/2003 12:18 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR Living in Style?, penned by Deborah d'Bajor

] in S&S2 the family seem to be extremely poorly off indeed!

I have always been a little confused about the property settlement. The girls were left a 1,000 pounds each by old Mr. Dashwood, who left the bulk of his fortune to John and Fanny's son. This is apparently the principal that is generating the 500 pounds a year on which they are supposed to live. The 10,000 pounds that is mentioned as being all that John's father "had left for his widow and daughters" is the money that John and Fanny appropriated for themselves? Does anyone know how much 500 pounds would be at the current rate of exchange?
