Willoughby's dislike of Brandon   Written by Jeanne P (8/12/2003 3:48 p.m.)
Are you new?

Though perhaps this may be explained later in the story, is there any reasonable explanation for Willoughby's statements of disliking Brandon?

I have read over and over the conversation between W., Elinor and Marianne, and it still doesn't make much sense. All I could come up with is W. disliking Brandon because he appears to be an unexciting, dull and boring person. (Rather cruel for such an emotional, sensitive person like W.)

In that same vein, W. and Marianne pride themselves on being people of great sensibility, but they are so selfish, mean, and narrow-minded toward almost everyone. They're even snobbish when people display less sensibility than themselves. Sensibility doesn't seem to be a very attractive trait.
